The Inspiring Leadership Reflection (ILERIS) is a monthly engagement platform designed to spotlight
accomplished individuals who share their personal journeys with young people. The initiative aims to
reshape the mindset of the younger generation by exposing them to the realities behind success
highlighting the struggles, persistence, and discipline that often go unseen behind luxurious lifestyles,
achievements, and material possessions.
As part of its April edition, ILER hosted Fatima Ibrahim Ahmad, Founder and CEO of Zarah Cafe and
Bakehouse, as the guest speaker on Monday, 20 April 2026, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at Bjorn
Beckman Hall. The session brought together 30 participants, creating an engaging and reflective
learning environment.
The event commenced with a welcome address delivered by Isa Garba, Program Officer at the Centre
for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), representing the Executive Director. In his
remarks, he emphasized the core objective of the program to inspire young people by connecting them
with real-life success stories and guiding them through practical life journeys. He reiterated that the
platform is intentionally designed to go beyond surface-level success and instead focus on the effort,
resilience, and sacrifices behind it.
In her presentation, Fatima Ibrahim Ahmad shared her inspiring personal story. She explained that
although she studied Physics and graduated as the best student, she later made a bold decision to
switch career paths into baking. Starting from a small corner in her kitchen, she began her business with
just one product doughnuts. She highlighted that she did not begin with a big brand, and along the way,
she made numerous mistakes and experienced financial losses.
Despite these challenges, she remained consistent and committed to her vision. She advised young
people not to wait for the “perfect time” to start, emphasizing that success often begins with small
steps. According to her, building something from nothing requires dedication, self-belief, and the
willingness to grow through challenges. She stressed the importance of discipline, continuous self-
motivation, and lifelong learning, noting that innovation is constant and individuals must keep improving
themselves and their work.

Fatima also spoke about the personal challenges she faced, particularly from family members. She
shared how, in the early stages, her products were sometimes given out freely to guests without
payment, affecting her business capital. Additionally, her father initially discouraged her entrepreneurial
path, preferring that she pursue a conventional job. However, through persistence, she was eventually
able to gain his support.
She encouraged participants to take ownership of their decisions and maintain personal responsibility.
She also emphasized the importance of spirituality, advising that while one should remain committed to
their faith and prayers, they must also understand that success comes with tests and challenges. She
noted that while divine support is important, individuals must continue to work hard and remain
focused.
Addressing the realities of business, she highlighted that success is often accompanied by multiple
challenges, including dealing with customers, staff, and even family expectations. She advised
participants to develop problem-solving skills, remain calm, and protect their personal and professional
space. She cautioned against over-sharing and encouraged thoughtful communication, noting that not
everything needs to be publicly expressed.
Fatima also spoke on trust and relationships in business, advising participants to be careful and
intentional in their interactions, as even close associates may disappoint them. She emphasized that fear
is natural but should not prevent action, and that failure is an essential part of the journey to success.
She further reminded participants that they cannot control others’ opinions, but they can control their
own actions and responses. Importantly, she noted that life should not be defined solely by money or
business success.
During the interactive session, participants asked several questions. In response to a question on
marketing strategies, she explained that social media has been a key tool in promoting her business,
significantly increasing visibility and attracting customers. When asked about her biggest challenge and
advice for beginners, she stressed the importance of consistency, belief in one’s work, and maintaining
a strong online presence.
On managing competition, she advised participants to continuously learn new skills and introduce
innovations into their businesses in order to remain relevant and competitive.
Overall, the session provided valuable insights into entrepreneurship, resilience, and personal growth. It
served as a powerful reminder that success is a journey shaped by persistence, discipline, and the
courage to start small while thinking big.
