For hundreds of children across 18 communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), writing a simple message is more than putting words on paper it is a chance to stay connected with people who support their dreams. Between April and July 2026, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), with support from ActionAid Nigeria under the Local Rights Programme (LRP), carried out the Child Message Collection (CMC) exercise to strengthen this vital connection between sponsored children and their sponsors.
The exercise covered communities across the FCT and resulted in the successful collection of 1,264 child messages and updated photographs, representing a 96 percent completion rate. Before the exercise began, CITAD engaged traditional leaders, caregivers and community volunteers to mobilise children and ensure the process was well understood. Volunteers also guided children in writing meaningful messages that reflected their experiences, aspirations and appreciation for their sponsors.
Beyond collecting messages, the exercise created opportunities to promote children’s wellbeing. More than 1,000 unlinked children participated in health education sessions on malaria prevention and good hygiene practices, while customised reusable water bottles carrying health messages were distributed to reinforce healthy habits within the communities.
The Child Message Collection once again demonstrated the strength of community collaboration. By bringing together caregivers, volunteers, traditional leaders and programme staff, the exercise not only strengthened accountability within the sponsorship programme but also reinforced community ownership. It reflects CITAD’s commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to remain connected, supported and heard while promoting the wellbeing of children across the participating communities.
