The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has sensitised 90 students of Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP), Bauchi, on digital privacy, data ownership and decentralised social media platforms.
The sensitisation workshop, held at the Career Services Directorate Hall of the polytechnic, introduced the students to CITAD’s dComms platform, a privacy-focused alternative to mainstream social media within the Fediverse.
Speaking at the event, Malam Buhari Abba, who represented CITAD’s Executive Director, said the workshop was aimed at promoting digital freedom, online autonomy and responsible management of personal information.
In a presentation titled “Social Media in the Age of AI and Big Tech vs the Fediverse,” Mubarak Shehu Dayyab explained the concept of the Fediverse and its significance as an alternative to platforms controlled by major technology companies.
Mr. Mubarak highlighted concerns about the handling of personal data and online privacy, urging participants to understand the importance of data ownership and greater control over their digital activities.
He also explained how decentralised social media platforms could provide users with alternatives to conventional platforms.
A live demonstration was conducted to guide participants through creating accounts on the CITAD server and navigating the Fediverse platform.
The demonstration generated interest among the students, with data giveaways for the first 10 students to register accounts further encouraging participation.
The workshop also featured an interactive question-and-answer session, during which participants sought clarification on the platform and its use.
In his closing remarks, Mr Mujahid Galadima appreciated the polytechnic’s management for its partnership and commended the students and staff for their participation.
The workshop attracted 90 students, alongside members of staff, and provided an opportunity for further engagement with student groups within the institution.
Some participants expressed interest in creating accounts on the platform, indicating growing awareness of decentralised social media alternatives and digital privacy.
The workshop was part of CITAD’s efforts to promote digital rights, privacy and user control over online communication through its dComms initiative.
The Fediverse comprises interconnected social media platforms that allow users on different services to communicate without relying on a single centralised platform.
