The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has sensitised 120 students of Aminu Saleh College of Education (ASCOE), Azare, Bauchi State, on digital privacy, data ownership and decentralised social media platforms.

The sensitisation workshop, held on Thursday at the college’s Administrative Block Board Room, introduced participants to dComms, a decentralised and privacy-focused social media platform within the Fediverse.

The workshop aimed to promote digital freedom and encourage students to explore alternatives to mainstream social media platforms.

Speaking at the event, Malam Buhari Abba, who led the CITAD team, welcomed participants on behalf of the organisation’s Executive Director and highlighted the importance of digital privacy and online autonomy.

He appreciated the college management for supporting the initiative and encouraging students and staff to participate.

In his presentation, Yusuf Babagana introduced participants to the Fediverse, explaining its structure, significance and differences between centralised and decentralised social networks.

He also highlighted the importance of protecting personal information and maintaining greater control over data shared online.

The facilitator subsequently demonstrated how participants could create accounts on the CITAD dComms server and navigate the platform.

The demonstration generated interest among participants, particularly after the announcement of a data giveaway for the first 10 students to register accounts.

An interactive question-and-answer session also provided participants with an opportunity to seek clarification on the platform and decentralised social media.

The workshop attracted 120 students, alongside members of staff of the college.

Speaking at the closing session, Mujahid Ameen appreciated the college management for its continued partnership, while thanking the students and staff for their participation.

The workshop increased awareness of decentralised social media alternatives and generated interest among participants in creating dComms accounts.

It also provided opportunities for further engagement and collaboration with student groups within the institution.

The initiative is part of CITAD’s efforts to promote digital inclusion, online privacy and greater public control over digital communication platforms.
