The activity commemorated International Youth Day (IYD) 2026 under the global theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” marked annually on 12 August. CITAD, with funding and technical support from ActionAid Nigeria under the Local Rights Programme (LRP), convened a two-day, hands-on Content Creation and Video Editing training for 54 youth — three selected from each of the 18 LRP communities in the FCT, with equal gender representation.
Day 1 focused on Digital Content Creation for Community Advocacy, facilitated by Yesmin Salako, Johnson Maichibi Musa, and Adeyinka Adepoyigi of ActionAid Nigeria. Sessions covered why content matters for advocacy (informing, mobilizing, pressuring duty-bearers, and amplifying affected voices), matching content format to advocacy goals, the “3-second rule” for capturing attention, the anatomy of an effective advocacy post (hook, evidence, stakes, and a clear call to action), practical guidance on documenting community realities (light, stability, framing, sound, and consent), and writing captions that move people to act. The session closed with an ethical digital communication discussion on consent, fact-checking, safety, and avoiding content that could expose community members to retaliation, followed by a live storytelling exercise in which participants practiced turning real, personal community issues, including access to water, road infrastructure, and school access into structured 3-line advocacy captions.
Day 2 focused on Practical Content Creation: Photography, Videography, and Mobile Content Production, facilitated by Zack Onwe. Participants were guided through phone photography techniques (light, the rule of thirds, angles), videography fundamentals (stabilization, audio, purposeful movement), a four-step workflow (plan, shoot, edit, publish), practical editing techniques (cutting, captioning, syncing sound, consistent transitions), storytelling hooks, and platform-specific publishing formats for Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and WhatsApp Status. The day concluded with a hands-on group challenge in which participants shot, edited, and published a short 30-second video applying the skills learned, group presentations, and a closing evaluation and ceremony.
Throughout both days, the training was delivered through a highly participatory, practical, and youth-friendly methodology combining interactive lectures, live demonstrations, hands-on practice, peer learning, and group presentations supported by prior community-level selection and mobilization coordinated by CITAD across the 18 LRP communities.
