Kano 13th Annual ICT Quiz

ICT quiz continue to be a major ingredient for raising awareness on ICT among teachers and students, encouraging the study of computer education and test ICT knowledge of students of secondary schools. In its effort to promote the ICT literacy in the state and the country, Kano_quiz2_2014the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has organized the 13th Annual ICT Quiz competition for secondary school students on Saturday 13th December, 2014. The event took place at the Main Auditorium of the School of Technology, Kano State Polytechnic, Kano.  The event was declared open with opening prayers by the Sagiru Ado Abubakar, then Kabiru Said Dakata who served as MC made the Introduction. He introduced the representative of the Hon. Commissioner Ministry of Education Kano State, representative of the Director General Kano State senior Secondary Management Board, representative of the Managing Director Abubakar Rimi Television, representative of the Chairman Parent Teachers Association, Members of the Press, Security Agents, Teachers and Students. He then listed the following as prizes to be won during this year’s ICT quiz.

  1. First Place Winner: Laptop donated by KSSSSMB
  1. Second Place: Desktop Computer donated by CITAD
  2. Third Place: Printer donated by Intersystem Institute of Information Technology
  3. Best Teacher of Winning School: Television Set donated by Alhaji Isah Ahmad former Permanent Secretary Ministry of Works and Housing Kano State
  4. Teachers of Runner Up Schools:  Wall Clock donated by Abubakar Rimi Television (ARTV)
  5. Student of Runner Up Schools: 5 yard of Shadda each donated by Alhaji Murtala Bala Maisallah & Sons
  6. Students of All Participating Schools: 1 T-Shirt donated by Nigeria Internet registration (NIRA)
  7. Certificate for All Teachers and Students of Participating Schools: Awarded by CITAD

Malam Ahmad Abdullahi Yakasai CITAD’s Training Coordinator made the welcome remark on behalf of the CITAD’s Executive Director. In his remarks, Malam Ahmad stated that whatever one is doing there must be a purpose; CITAD has a purpose for doing this ICT quiz competition for about 13 years. Everybody knows the importance of ICT knowledge in developing a nation. ICT knowledge needs to be inculcated into the minds of our younger ones since from the grass root level. He then cited examples of CITAD programs used to boost the ICT knowledge to the students in the state such as ICT for Kids, use of Handset and different certificate and diploma courses at the organization. At the end he urged the students to participate well and win different prizes.

In his good will message, the Honorable Commissioner Ministry for Education who was ably represented by the Alhaji Falala Director Education support stated that, CITAD is non-governmental organization which the ministry of education proud of, committed in propagating the ICT knowledge in the state and country at large. “We are really proud of you”. He also mentioned that the Honorable Commissioner directed me to request CITAD to include us in the preparation of this program early in the next coming program. The Honorable Commissioner wished to be here but due to the pressure of work in office he couldn’t, Alhaji Falala added.

Malam Zakariyya Muhd who represented the Director General KSSSMB acknowledged the effort of CITAD in improving the curricular of ICT education of the secondary schools of the state. The Director General loves that. Malam Zakariyya then reminds the gathering the effort of the KSSSMB in the education sector for initiating the weekly science quiz and general evaluation of secondary school teachers in the state. In their good will messages, Alhaji Sani Halliru representative of the Chairman Parent Teachers Association, Deputy Director Program representative of the Managing Director ARTV and Hajiya Hafsatu Muhd Kawu representative of the Honorable Commissioner Ministry of Youth Support and Women Affairs urged the students to stand up and acquire the ICT knowledge since from the secondary school level.

Twenty six senior secondary schools from all part of Kano State participated in the quiz and battled to emerge as winners of different prizes. The schools were: GGS Karaye, GGUC Kachako, Al-azhar school, Kano Capital Girls, GGS Kwankwaso, GGS Dala, GGSS Yargaya, SSS Tahir, GGSS Hassana Sufi, GGSS Kura, GSS Danbatta, GSS Kafin Maiyaki, GSS Sumaila, GGC Dala, GGSS Jogana, GGSS Kabo, Rumfa Collage, GGC Kano, GGC Gezawa, GSS Rano, Kano Capital Boys, GSS Gano, GSS Gwarzo, GCT Tudun Wada Dankadai, GSS Ajingi and GGASS Sumaila.

First round of the quiz featured 14 schools on the first come first serve basis. The schools were: GGS Karaye, GGUC Kachako, Al-azhar school, Kano Capital Girls, GGS Kwankwaso, GGS Dala, GGSS Yargaya, SSS Tahir, GGSS Hassana Sufi, GGSS Kura, GSS Danbatta and GSS Kafin Maiyaki. The quiz master asked the schools to answer five questions each and each question carries 2 marks. GGS Dala and SSS Tahir answered only one question and scored 2 marks each. GGUC Kachaco and GGSS Yargaya answered 2 questions each and scored 4 marks each. GGS Karaye, Kano Capital Girls, GGSS Kura and GSS Danbatta answered 3 questions and scored 6 marks each.  GGSS Hassana Sufi answered 4 questions and score 8 marks. Alazhar and GSS Kafin Maiyaki answered all their questions and scored 10 marks each. Only GGS Kwankwaso couldn’t answer any question and got nil.

In view of the above, GGSS Hassana Sufi that answered 4 questions and score 8 marks, Alazhar and GSS Kafin Maiyaki that answered all their questions and scored 10 marks each emerged victorious and able to secure a place in the final round.

The second round featured the following schools: GSS Sumaila, GGC Dala, GGSS Jogana, GGSS Kabo, Rumfa Collage, GGC Kano, GGC Gezawa, GSS Rano, Kano Capital Boys, GSS Gano, GSS Gwarzo, GCT Tudun Wada Dankadai, GSS Ajingi and GGASS Sumaila.

GSS Sumaila, GGC Gezawa, GSS Rano, GCT Tudun Wada Dankade and GGASS Sumaila answered only 1 question and scored 2 marks each. GGSS Kabo answered 2 questions each and scored 4 marks. GGC Dala, GGSS Jogana, Kano Capital Boys, and GSS Gano answered 3 questions and scored 6 marks each. While Rumfa Collage, GGC Kano and GSS Gwarzo answered 4 questions and scored 8 marks each. This indicated that Rumfa Collage, Kano, GGC Kano and GSS Gwarzo will meet GSS Kafin Mai Yaki, GGSS Hassana Sufi and Ala-azhar in the final.

The final round of the quiz competition was very excited because there was a tie. After answering the questions, GGSS Hassana Sufi and GSS Gwarzo scored 6 marks each. GGC Kano scored 4 marks while Kafin Maiyaki, Al-azhar and Rumfa Collage, Kano got 8 marks each. Due to this Alhaji Sagir Muhammad who served as the Chief Judge of the competition announced that the above three schools has to go for another round in order to get the first place position, second place position and third place position. At the end of the final round GGSS Mai Yaki won the first place position, Rumfa Collage, Kano won the second place while Al-azhar got the third place position.

The chief judge announced the final result and registered his thanks to CITAD then awarded free scholarship to all students that participated in the final round. The MC thanked all the audience for their corporation for the success of the quiz and asked for comments and contributions. Malam Aliyu Isa Abdurrashid from GSS Sumaila commented that there is need to have practical sessions in the quiz not only theory because computer is all about practical. Mubarak Musa Abdullahi a student from GSS Gwarzo commented that there is need for the quiz master to be reading the questions loudly in order to ease confusion among the students.

Alhaji Sagir Muhammad Managing Director Intersystem presented a printer to the 3rd place position Al-azhar. While Alhaji Bala Mai Sallah helped to present a Desktop Computer to the 2nd place position and Alhaji Zakariyya who represented the Director General KSSSSMB presented the a laptop to GSS Kafin Mai Yaki who won the first place position.

Malam Isyaku Garba of CITAD made the vote of thank. He thanked the representative of the Hon. Commissioner Ministry of Education Kano State, representative of the Director General Kano State senior Secondary Management Board, representative of the Managing Director Abubakar Rimi Television, representative of the Chairman Parent Teachers Association, Members of the Press, Security Agents, Teachers and Students. He also thanked those that assisted CITAD by giving different prizes and everybody that contributed in conducting the quiz directly or in directly.
