On 17th November, 2012, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has organized an entrepreneurship inter secondary school quiz competition. The quiz competition was among the series of activities organized by the Centre to celebrate this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week which comes up from the 14-20, November 2012. The Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is a global effort to address problems of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship. A month before the quiz competition, series of career talk lectures were conducted to the schools that are expected to participate in the quiz.
The competition which nine schools contested was held at the assembly hall of Aminu Kano Community Commercial Collage, Kano under the chairmanship of Alh. Kabiru Nasambo and Aminu Shehu Kofar Mata Assistant Registra Collage of Arts Science and Remedial Studies (CAS) and Hajiya Farida as the guests of honor. The schools that participated in the quiz were GGASS Gwammaja, GGSS Hasana Sufi, GGSS Hausawa, Rumfa Collage, Kano, GGSS Bulukiya, GGSS Mariri, AKCCC, Kano and GSCS Airport Road.
The competition commenced around 11am with an opening prayer from Malam Mahmud Ibrahim of AKCCC, Kano. In his welcome remark, Ahmad Abdullahi Yakasai who represented the Executive Director of Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) stated that, CITAD organized this quiz to celebrate this year`s Global Entrepreneurship Week. He mentioned that CITAD decided to involve students in the celebration in order to inculcate the sense of entrepreneurship to the students since at the secondary school level as government could not provide everybody with job in the country. Malam Ahmad added that in celebration of the week, CITAD also organized public lecture to the students of the tertiary institutions in the state. Beside the public lecture, there are also radio programs aimed at addressing the problems of entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
In his remark, the chairman of the quiz competition Alh Kabiru Nasambo who is an expert on entrepreneurship and an independent business man in Kano described the GEW as good development toward solving the problems of entrepreneurship in the state. He then commended the efforts of the organizers (CITAD) for initiating such useful event that would change the thinking and attitude of the young ones since from the grass root. He then urged them to show good behavior during the competition. ´´ been self reliant is the wisdom behind the initiating of this quiz, I’m not saying you should not concentrate on your studies but at the same time you should develop the sense of the entrepreneurship in your career´´. He said.
After the addresses, the CITAD quiz team read the rules and regulation for the quiz to the schools and required the schools to answer four questions each at the first round. The first round featured GGSS Hasana Sufi and GSCS Airport road having 8 marks each, while GGASS Gwammaja, AKCCC and GGSS Bulukiya with 6 marks each. In view of this, the quiz team asked the schools that scored 8 marks to go for the second round with the intention of getting the first and second place postion between the two schools. After answering one question each, Hassana Sufi emerged the winner of the first place position and GSCS Airport Road automatically emerged the winner of the third place position.
Subsequently, the quiz team asked the remaining 3 schools with 6 marks each to go for the next round on the effort to get the third place position. This round considered more exciting than the previous one, because four interested rounds were held before AKCCC emerged the winner of the third place position.
At the end of the quiz, Kabir Said Dakata who served as the MC during the quiz asked the chairman to come and announce the result. Then he invited the guests of honor to help and distribute the prizes to the winners. It was started with the third place prize where a 14 inches TV set was presented to the representative of AKCCC by the guest of honor Hajiya Frida, The second place prize also a TV 17 inches was presented to the representative of GSCS Airport Road by the guest of honor Aminu Shehu Kofar Mata assistant registra collage of Arts Science and remedial Studies. The first place prize was given by the chairman himself to the teacher and the students of Hasana Sufi.
Besides the prizes for schools, there were also prizes for the students that participate in in the quiz. Each student was given five yards Shadda. Also sets of ICT books were given to the teachers who accompanied the students to the quiz.
At the end of the competition, Malam Isyaku of CITAD gave the vote of thanks. He thanked the chairman of the occasion, the guests of honor, the teachers and the principal AKCCC for given the venue. He then thanked the quiz team for aspiring their time organizing the quiz.
Malam Muhammad Alhassan Albashir vice principal AKCCC offered the closing prayers around 2: 30pm.
