The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has sensitised students of the School of Rural Technology and Development (SORTED), Rano, on the use of dComms and the Fediverse as alternative social media platforms.
The sensitisation lecture, held on Wednesday, was facilitated by Suhail Sani Abdullahi and featured practical sessions to familiarise students with decentralised digital communication platforms.
The session introduced participants to the Fediverse, a network of interconnected social media platforms that enables users to communicate and share content across different services without relying on a single centralised platform.
It also highlighted dComms as an alternative digital communication space that promotes greater user control, privacy and decentralised online interactions.
During the practical sessions, students were introduced to how decentralised platforms work and how they could explore alternative social media spaces for communication and information sharing.
The facilitator also highlighted the importance of understanding digital rights, data privacy and responsible online engagement in an increasingly interconnected world.
The initiative forms part of CITAD’s efforts to promote digital inclusion and raise awareness of alternative digital platforms that offer users greater control over their online interactions.
The organisation has continued to engage students and other groups on the opportunities presented by decentralised social media platforms as alternatives to mainstream services.
The session was held on Oct. 29, 2025, at SORTED, Rano, Kano State.
