Introduction
The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) in partnership with 2M
Data Consults set up a 2-day training on R Statistical Data Analysis, held from 13th to 14th
August 2024, the training was a comprehensive program aimed at equipping academicians with
essential skills in statistical analysis using the R programming language. The event took place at
the Prof Bjorn Beckman Hall, CITAD Kano Office, Kano State, running from 9:00 am to 3:00
pm each day. Fourteen (14) participants were trained in this maiden cohort of R data analysis
training.
Objectives
The primary objectives of the training was to:
Introduce participants to the fundamentals of R programming.
Teach practical skills in data manipulation, analysis, and visualization using R.
Provide hands-on experience with real-world data sets.
Enable participants to apply statistical methods for data-driven decision-making.
Day 1: Introduction to R and Basic Statistical Analysis
The first day of the training focused on introducing participants to R, covering installation, basic
commands, and an overview of its capabilities. The session then progressed to fundamental
statistical concepts, including R programming syntax, libraries installations and Data Frame.
Participants were guided through practical exercises using R, allowing them to apply the
concepts learned in real-time.
Key Sessions:
Introduction to R Programming: Understanding the interface, basic commands, and
how to set up a working environment.
Libraries Installations: Understanding how to update and install libraries.
Data frame Creation: Basic data creation using data frame function
Exercises: Hands-on exercises
Day 2: Data Analysis and cleaning
The second day delved into more advanced topics, including regression analysis, time series
analysis, probability distributions, and hypothesis testing. Participants were introduced to various
packages in R, such as ggplot2, for creating sophisticated visualizations. The training
emphasized practical application, with participants working on projects that involved analyzing
datasets and presenting their findings using R.
Key Sessions:
Regression and Classification Analysis: Linear and logistic regression models in R.
Time Series Analysis: Techniques for analyzing and forecasting time-dependent data.
Descriptive Statistics in R: Exploring measures of central tendency and variability.
Probability Distributions: Understanding and applying normal, binomial, and Poisson
distributions.
Hypothesis Testing: Conducting t-tests, chi-square tests, and ANOVA in R.
Project Work: Participants applied their learning to analyze datasets and present their
results.
Speakers
The training featured a lineup of experienced speakers and trainers who are experts in the field of
statistical data analysis:
R Facilitators
Nafiu Hussaini
Ibrahim Yusuf Ibrahim
Umar Kabir Abdullahi
Abdurrahman Abdulhamid
Muhammad Abubakar Adam
In conclusion, the 2-day training on R Statistical Data Analysis was a highly successful event,
providing participants with valuable skills in statistical analysis and data visualization using R.
The interactive sessions and hands-on projects ensured that attendees not only learned the
theoretical aspects but also gained practical experience that they can apply in their respective
fields.
Participants left the training with a solid foundation in R programming and the confidence to
handle complex data analysis tasks, making them better equipped for data-driven roles in their
organizations. They also received the certificate of participation after the event.
