Exploring AI’s role on elections and governance:
A large gathering of social influencers convened at the 5th Kano Social Influencers Summit, sparking an important dialogue on how artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping the electoral processes and governance.
The event organized by the Center for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), the two-day event, held at the Grand Central Hotel, Kano, offered a platform for influencers from diverse backgrounds to explore the dual nature of AI in enhancing or undermining democratic processes. With the theme “Artificial Intelligence in Election and Governance: Potentials for Process Enhancement vs. Perils of Digital Surveillance and Misinformation,” the summit delved into both the promises and threats that AI presents in the political arena.
The discussions centered on how AI can streamline election-related activities like voter registration, ballot counting, and result transmission, ensuring greater transparency and efficiency.
However, concerns were also raised about the potential misuse of AI for surveillance, data manipulation, and the amplification of misinformation during elections.
Opening the event on Wednesday, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusif, represented by his Special Adviser on State Affairs, Alhaji Usman Bala, applauded CITAD for fostering dialogue around such critical issues. He emphasized the importance of using social influence to promote positive social change and reiterated Kano State’s commitment to collaborating with organizations that support development and innovation.
CITAD Executive Director Yunusa Zakari Ya’u highlighted the need to approach AI with caution. “Artificial intelligence in elections is a double-edged sword. While it offers immense potential for enhancing electoral transparency, it also carries risks of misuse,” he said. Ya’u urged for thoughtful regulation to harness AI’s positive impact while mitigating risks of digital surveillance and misinformation.
Key speakers, including representatives from government agencies, civil society organizations, and the private sector, stressed the importance of social influencers in safeguarding democracy.
The summit also held various panel sections that provided an opportunity for experts influencers to share their experiences and strategize on leveraging their platforms to uphold social justice, transparency, and community development.As AI continues to advance, events like the Kano Social Influencers Summit remind society of the delicate balance needed to ensure technology serves democracy rather than undermining it.
The ceremony saw a gathering of distinguished guests, including Amina Salihu, standing in for Dr. Kole Shettima, Africa Director of the MacArthur Foundation. Among the notable attendees were Prof. Amina Kaidal, Chair of CITAD’s Board, a representative from the Board of Trustees, and Fatima Madaki from Search for Common Ground. Also present were Olumide Olaniyan, Adama Adamu, Tsema Ede, Andrea Kwen, and other prominent figures.
